Importance of Healthy Growth In Children Vidya Sury

Horlicks has been a part of my son’s diet since he was three years old. I implicitly believe in the benefits of starting a nutritious diet as early as possible. My Mother often advised that children cultivate the habits we introduce to them when they are toddlers and are able to understand when we explain it to them in simple terms.

We ensured that he started his day with a glass of Horlicks, followed by a healthy breakfast and balanced meals through the day, including protein, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals. He enjoyed eating fruits and vegetables and naturally has a preference for rotis rather than rice.

Today, at 18, he continues to follow those healthy eating habits, conscious about the importance of including fruits, vegetables and fiber with each meal even though he studies on campus, away from home.

What about children who are not lucky enough to grow up healthy and do not achieve their ideal weight and height?

Why is healthy growth important for your child?

As a parent, you are already aware that the critical growth phase for your child is between the age of 3 and 9. Even though you are trying your best, children can be fussy with their food. School going children can fall sick and become cranky. In the process, their still-developing immune system finds it hard to keep them consistently healthy. When a child loses growth during these crucial years, they need that extra care to catch up on lost growth and the ideal way to do this is via proper nutrition.

Here are some facts about child nutrition:

Children need a healthy diet to grow and learn. It also helps them stay healthy and fight disease.

For babies, in their first year of life, it is all about milk via breast milk or formula or a combination of the two. Through this, baby gets every nutrient she needs. At six months, they start solid foods like iron fortified infant food and pureed fruits and vegetables.

For toddlers and pre-schoolers who experience growth spurts along with variable appetites, one has to ensure that they make healthy choices to get the nutrition they need. During this time, the focus is on calcium, a vital building block for strong healthy bones and teeth and fiber to prevent heart disease, help keep their digestion healthy, preventing constipation and other conditions. They must eat calcium rich foods and fruits and vegetables, whole grains and beans for fiber.

Once your child starts school, take care to moderate sugar /carbs, fats and salt as it can lead to unhealthy weight and health issues. One way to do this is to pack healthy lunches and teach them healthy choices, explaining why they should make them.

At every stage, it is a parenting challenge to keep your child healthy and ensuring they meet their healthy growth goals.

How can you give our child a nutritious diet?

Here are some tips I followed:

  • Fill half of what is on your child’s plate fruits and vegetables
  • Pick healthy sources for protein
  • Include fiber through whole grains and cereals. Avoid refined grains.
  • Prefer to broil, grill and steam rather than deep frying
  • Minimize fast food and junk food
  • Opt for water or milk rather than sugary fruit drinks and sodas.

A child’s requirement of iron and calcium changes with age and it is important to know how to ensure she gets it.

Of course most families try their very best to feed their children well so that they grow up strong, capable of performing well in school and then, later in life. When children are unable to reach growth milestones, parents naturally become anxious and look for ways to give their children a chance to catch up on their lost growth.
