If you answered yes, you can prevent heartburn.
Just about the worst thing you can do if you get heartburn regularly is to start taking more and more antacids. Forget the ads on TV. Antacids are a once-off solution, not a long-term one. If you regularly get heartburn, try doing some of the following things to prevent it:
  • Try to lose weight if you are overweight
  • Get some regular exercise
  • Eat smaller meals
  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid spicy food
  • Avoid large, high-fat meals, particularly in the evening
  • Limit the amount of coffee and alcohol you drink
  • Avoid fruit juices with citric acid
  • Raise the head of your bed by about 15 cm
  • Cut down on your alcohol consumption
